If you’ve been scouring Google like a detective looking for the best Boston engagement photo locations, you’ve probably realized something: There are… a lot of options.
Historic brownstones. Waterfront views. Cozy coffee shops. Museums. Ice cream trucks. Parks. Skyline views. Your favorite neighborhood bar. The place where you had your first date. The apartment you’ve built a life together in. The list could just go on.
The good news? Boston has no shortage of beautiful places for engagement photos.
The slightly overwhelming news? Boston has no shortage of beautiful places for engagement photos.
As a Boston wedding photographer who has photographed engagement sessions all over the city (and spent way too much time scouting locations), I’ve learned that the best engagement session location doesn’t have to be the most popular one.
I highly encourage you to choose a location based on the vibe, or story, of your relationship. Years from now, I don’t want you looking at your photos and thinking, “Wow, that’s a pretty location.” I want you looking at your photos and having them hit that nostalgic nerve that brings you back to that exact moment.

What to Expect From Your Engagement Session
I want everyone to leave their engagement session feeling like it was the most fun they’ve ever had. Seriously. This isn’t a test run for your wedding day. It’s not two hours of awkward posing while wondering what your hands are supposed to be doing.
This is a chance for us to get to know each other before your wedding day. We’ll spend some time together and create photos that will totally EATTT.
We’ll walk around. We’ll talk. We’ll probably be laughing the entire time. I’ll probably make you do something kind of ridiculous and watch that become one of your favorite photos.
My goal, as a candid wedding photographer, isn’t to capture perfect photos. But to capture authentic, unstaged moments that turn into your favorite photos…. And choosing the right location plays a huge role in that.

Classic Boston Engagement Photo Locations: Boston Common & Beacon Hill
If you’ve been googling Boston photo locations, you’ve probably seen Boston Common and Beacon Hill come up again and again.
Boston Common is pretty much a melting pot for photo opportunities. You’ll see willow trees, historic bridges, city views, open green space, and gorgeous seasonal changes throughout the year.

Right next door, Beacon Hill features iconic cobblestone streets, historic architecture, charming brownstones, and some of the most recognizable Boston scenery around.
Together, they create one of the most dog-friendly, iconic combinations for Boston engagement photo locations in the city.

My biggest recommendation for both of these locations is to arrive early and park in the Boston Common Garage (0 Charles St, Boston, MA 02116). It’s below the Common and a reasonable price compared to many other local garages. This garage does fill up as the day goes on, so if you are planning an evening shoot it’s something to be mindful of.
Weekday mornings around sunrise are the perfect time in my opinion. The streets are fairly quiet and it feels like you have the city all to yourselves.
For couples wanting to make a whole morning out of it, I love pairing these locations with places like Beacon Hill Books & Cafe, JP Licks, or a stop at the Frosty Truck.
A Boston Skyline Photo Location: Boston Harbor
If your vibe is a little more dramatic, Boston Harbor is one of my favorite recommendations. This is one of the best options for couples looking for a true Boston skyline photo location.
The harbor features waterfront views, sailboats, city architecture, and skyline backdrops all in one place. And during summer evenings, the light here is *chef’s kiss*.
It pairs perfectly with a Classic Sail Boston adventure and works well for couples who want their photos to feel a little elevated and a little editorial.
One of my favorite things about the harbor is how much variety we can get without covering a ton of ground. Waterfront one minute, skyline the next.
And yes, it’s dog-friendly, so your four-legged family member is absolutely welcome. There are also tons of parking garages in the area, creating one less thing for you to worry about.

City Boston Photo Locations: The South End
While parks are absolutely beautiful, not every engagement session needs to be at a park. Sometimes the city itself is the only location you need.
The South End is one of my favorite engagement or even Boston wedding photo locations because it offers so much character without feeling overly touristy. You’ll see cobblestone streets, historic architecture, brownstones, local shops, and so many hidden corners that look like they came straight out of a movie.
You could have a photoshoot here year-round and it is especially great for couples who want more urban or “lived-in” photos.
The best sessions here usually happen in the evening and there are plenty of parking garages for you to choose from.

Nature Boston Photo Locations: Backbay Fens
If you want to be surrounded by nature without leaving the city, Backbay Fens is an underrated gem.
You’ll find bridges, flowers, walking paths, and open green spaces that are surprisingly tucked away considering you’re still in the bustling city of Boston.
It works great for every season and tends to have a slightly calmer crowd level (especially in the morning) than some of the more popular parks around the city.
If you’re looking for a location that’s relaxed, surrounded by nature, you can bring your furry friend, and a little less busy, this is definitely one to consider. There is metered parking surrounding the park so you won’t need to worry about walking far either.

The Best North Shore Boston Photo Locations
If you’re willing to venture a little farther away, the North Shore has some incredible Boston photo locations.
Hellcat Observation Tower
If marsh views, waterfront scenery, and golden-hour sunsets sound like your thing, this spot is hard to beat.
It feels completely different from downtown Boston and features some of the most peaceful landscapes around.
I highly recommend coming during the spring, summer, or fall, and maybe even bring your pup. There are a lot less crowds here and a parking lot, so you really can’t go wrong with the Hellcat Observation Tower.

Sandy Point Beach
For beach-loving couples, Sandy Point offers beautiful sunsets and coastal New England charm. Summer and fall here are the most ideal, but keep in mind that you can’t bring your pup and there may be slightly more crowds here than at Hellcat Observation Tower.
One quick note: summer evenings can get buggy, so bug spray is your best friend. And they do have their own parking lot so you won’t need to worry about that.

Crane Estate
For couples who love historic architecture and grand estate vibes, Crane Estate is absolutely stunning.
The property features beautiful grounds, historic buildings, and incredible North Shore views.
There are permit requirements, photography restrictions to keep in mind, and no dogs allowed, but the final result is absolutely worth it.

Bars, Restaurants, Coffee Shops, and Other Meaningful Boston Engagement Photo Locations
I said it once, but I’ll say it again… Your engagement photos DO NOT need to happen in a park.
Some of my favorite sessions are from inside restaurants, bars, coffee shops, bookstores, and places that hold history with my couples. Maybe it’s the bagel shop where you spend every Sunday morning. Maybe it’s the wine bar where you had your first date. Maybe it’s an at-home engagement session. Or maybe it’s the neighborhood you walk through every night with your dog.
Those locations are a part of your story in a way that no other location can replicate.
I’ve photographed enough sessions in restaurants and businesses at this point that I’ve become pretty good at figuring out logistics, permissions, timing, and all the questions we need to ask beforehand.
So if you have an idea, throw it out there. Seriously. Please don’t assume it won’t work. Some of the best Boston engagement photo locations start with a couple saying, “This might be weird, but…”

How to Choose the Right Boston Engagement Session Location
If you’re trying to choose one of the best Boston engagement photo locations for yourself as a couple, I highly recommend stopping and thinking about what would look and feel the best to you.
Ask yourself:
What do we normally do together?
Where do we spend our weekends?
Do we want city, nature, waterfront, or something more personal?
Do we want our photos to be cozy, playful, editorial, nostalgic, or adventurous?
The answers usually lead us to the perfect location.
And if you’re feeling stuck? That’s what I’m here for!
