A Massachusetts backyard wedding venue is one of my FAVORITE spaces to photograph! They have a similar feel to the energy of an intimate, relaxed backyard barbecue blended with the elegance and romance of a wedding. Plus, the natural lighting and gorgeous outdoor scenery helps me capture some of the best wedding photos, and the more casual atmosphere helps put the couple and guests at ease in front of the camera.
While a wedding outside may seem like a more low-key way to celebrate your special day, there are so many things couples can do to elevate their backyard wedding venue so that it’s more than just a “yard party.” Because you’re not limited to a wedding venue with regulations and restrictions, you can have fun with things, and add in a few simple wedding ideas and beautiful, personal details. With proper planning, you can turn an outdoor wedding into a memorable and timeless event!
Here are 5 essential steps you can take to elevate your backyard wedding:
Step 1: Determine if a Backyard Wedding is Really for You
While a backyard wedding is a fun and exciting way to celebrate your special day, it’s also important to consider all of the logistics for holding an outdoor wedding, including time of year, location, spacing, and city requirements.

Think about the weather. If you’re planning a summer wedding, then make sure you have shading available, such as sailcloth tents or canopies, and a means for keeping guests cool, like handheld party favor fans, umbrellas, and beverage stations. Or, if it’s an October wedding, it might be worth investing in outdoor heaters or fire pits to ensure guests are warm and comfortable throughout the ceremony.
Something else to consider are the capacity and regulations of your backyard wedding venue. It’s helpful to make a list of everyone you want to include in your special day, and then gauge if all of those people will be able to fit in the backyard space that you have, or if you may need to consider changing outdoor venues. Consider other city-wide regulations as well, such as extra insurance requirements, noise limits, fire codes, and alcohol serving restrictions. Be sure to do your research!
It’s also important to consider parking. Will guests need places to park their cars? Is your backyard walking distance from a local hotel where everyone can stay? Do you have limited parking availability so that guests will need to Uber or carpool? Vendors also need places to park their vehicles in order to load and unload all of their equipment, food, decorations, etc.
Thinking through all of the logistics will give you a better idea of whether or not holding your wedding in your backyard is a realistic option. But with mindful planning, most people can make it happen!
Step 2: Hire a Wedding Planner
There is a lot to think through when it comes to planning a backyard wedding. Hiring a backyard wedding planner is essential and can help take off most of the pressure by creating a smooth-flowing wedding day plan that works for you!

Wedding planners can help you plan out every moment and detail of the day, from your first look (which I always recommend!) to generators for electricity, the transition from the ceremony into cocktail hour and the reception. They can ensure there is enough seating and food, that everyone and everything is in place, and they can anticipate any hiccups that may come along with hosting an outdoor wedding to ensure that all of the little details you want are included in your special day!
I’ve been the go-to wedding photographer for many outdoor weddings in Massachusetts and the surrounding areas, and have close contacts with some of the best local MA wedding planners. Some of my absolute favorites include:
These 3 local Massachusetts wedding planners are professional, organized, compassionate, and have years of experience delegating every aspect of planning out your perfect wedding, from the moment the guests arrive all the way to the moment the bride and groom wave goodbye and head off on their honeymoon!
Step 3: Book Your Vendors

Once you’ve got a general plan for your wedding day and a solid wedding planner to help you work through the details, the next step is to book all of your vendors!
Hiring professional vendors to take care of set up and add in beautiful, elegant touches is what can take an outdoor wedding from fun and casual to an unforgettable experience.
Tables, chairs, and tents: You can elevate the whole vibe of your outdoor wedding venue with elegant details, such as high-quality tables and chairs with enough seating for everyone, and a sailcloth tent for the reception. Higher quality and durability make all the difference in elevating the space and feel of the event.
Wedding Photographer: Hiring a photographer for a wedding goes without saying. But inviting them to see the property and talk through special requests before the wedding ensures they are able to make the most of capturing your special day!

Videographer: A videographer is totally optional, but is also a nice option to capture your special moments in real time. Some of my personal recommendations are Films By Em and Andy Hansen Films!
Florist: Elevate your wedding with extravagant floral arrangements. It’s a simple but beautiful way to compliment the natural outdoor setting. Some of my most recommended floral vendors include Amuse Floral Co., Absuna, and Sweet Talk Floral.
Catering: Decide together what kind of theme you want for your wedding, then talk through food restrictions and preferences, and do some tastings!
(Pro Tip! Talk with your caterer about having staff around that will clear tables and clean up throughout the event so there isn’t leftover trash everywhere. Smooth transitions are key!)
Hair Stylist + Makeup Artist: Be sure to discuss time frames, lighting, and spacing beforehand. One hair stylist I love who always does beautiful bridal hair is Maddy Kinney. Lots of my clients have recommended her! For makeup, I’ve seen great results with The Exclusive Aesthetic and Samantha Kate Artistry.
Open Bar: This one speaks for itself. An open bar is one of the best parts of a wedding!

Restrooms: Accessible bathrooms are important (especially if you have an open bar)! If you don’t want guests wandering around your house, there are nice, quality outdoor restrooms that you can rent and set up close by, with signage and indicators so that guests know exactly where to go when they need to go!
Music + Extras: The great thing about hosting a backyard wedding is that since you’re saving on venue fees, you can allocate those extra funds towards something memorable and extravagant, such as an oyster shucking station for a coastal wedding, or a live band! Hiring a DJ is always a great option. The Glitter Boys always get wedding guests up and moving! But if it’s in the budget, I am all for bringing in live music to a wedding outdoors, like The Sultans of Swing. This adds so much more vibrancy to the atmosphere and makes for some of the best wedding photos!
Booking these vendors way in advance and coordinating with your wedding planner will ensure a smooth backyard wedding that’s both fun and organized!
Step 4: Decide on the Little Things
Your wedding planner can help you plan out your special day so that everything runs smoothly. But ultimately, it’s up to you what all you want to include! Without the onset pressure from wedding venue restrictions, there are many simple ways you can take an outside wedding to the next level through beautiful, elegant details.

Tie in sentimentals.
Your wedding is about celebrating your love together as newlyweds. You can make it feel more special and personal to you by adding in unique sentimental elements, such as displaying photos from when you were kids, incorporating the lyrics to your wedding song into the decor, or any other meaningful touches that connect with holding your wedding right at home in your backyard.

I had one client who decided to take the poem her father wrote to her when she and the groom first got engaged and print it on the cocktail napkins. It was such a sweet, sentimental touch!
Consider doing a first look.
Since you’re probably getting ready at home, consider getting ready together or doing a first look so you’re able to enjoy more of the day and move around your home and backyard freely without the fear of your partner seeing you before the ceremony. First looks are a beautiful way to have an intimate and personal moment together before the ceremony begins.

Talk through the day and make a plan with your local photographer.
As a documentary-style photographer, one major priority for me is to take wedding photos that capture the overall essence and experience of the day. I focus on presence over performance so that your pictures come out true to the day and show your genuine love for each other.

I LOVE the effortless vibe that a backyard wedding venue allows! But it’s very important to me to solidify a seamless timeline for your special day so that we can take beautiful pictures without interrupting the flow of the wedding. Bringing me on as your wedding photographer, I’ll work with you to craft a timeline that focuses on your priorities so that you can get the most out of the photography on your wedding day.
Step 5: Enjoy Your Special Day!
With all the planning and thought that went into curating your special day, now is the time to let the wedding planner and vendors do their jobs, and just be present in the moment! (Trust me, it makes for better wedding photos!)

These are some helpful tips, but it’s important to just remember: it’s your wedding day, however you want to spend it!
